Bees are hardwired to do a specific job. For example, a scout bee will search for new sources of food while soldier bees are hardwired to protect. About one percent of all middle-aged bees become undertakers, which means they remove dead bees from the hive. However, bees have to change their brain chemistry before they can take on a new job.

Bees can recognize human faces the same way that humans do and it’s known as configural processing. The New York Times reports that this type of process could help computer scientists improve the way facial recognition technology works.

Bees do not see flowers the way humans do. Bees see in the ultraviolet spectrum (which humans cannot do), but they can’t see the color red. To find flowers, bees use smell and ultraviolet patterns, known also as honeyguides, to create landing zones.
