  1. Hantavirus: This virus can be found in both rats and mice and it can be life-threatening. There is currently no vaccine for this virus which can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and muscle aches.
  2. LCMV (Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis): This virus is usually found in common house mice and occurs in two stages
    1. The first stage comes with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, headaches, and lack of hunger.
    2. The second stage affects a person neurologically with symptoms of meningitis, encephalitis, or meningoencephalitis.
  3. Plague: The plague that killed millions of people in the Middle Ages is still being carried by rodents today. The plague itself is carried by infected fleas that travel on rodents. There are three types of plague:  Bubonic, Septicemic, Pneumonic. Each plague harbors different symptoms depending on the type of plague a person has been infected by. Treatment through antibiotics is the only way to avoid further complications that could lead to death.
  4. Salmonella: This type of bacteria can be carried within the digestive tract of a rodent. It is then transmitted through a rodent’s waste leading to symptoms of fever, chills, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  5. Rat Bite Fever: Spread from rat to human through a bite, this type of bacteria causes symptoms like skin rashes, headaches, fever, muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting.
  6. Tularemia: This bacteria, which is caused by Francisella tularemia is found in hares, rabbits, and rodents. It is typically transferred from to a human via an infected tick or deer fly bite. It can cause severe health conditions that could be fatal if a person is not treated with an antibiotic. The most common symptoms related to Tularemia are fever, cough, chest pain, and difficulty in breathing.
