Fall Time Pests: Everything You Need to Know

Fall is just right around the corner, which means the leaves will start changing color and the aroma of pumpkin-spiced treats will start filling the air . Also, it means that the pests that have mostly been staying outside will now start coming into our homes too.

Here is the information you need to know about fall time pests:

Bees: While they thrive in warmer temps, a bee can continue to forage during temps of 55 or higher. This means that we won’t start to see them disappear until about mid-fall. Instead, they continue to forage food for their hive to eat during the cold winter months. They have switched from needing the protein that feeds their young to craving the carbs that are essential before they start to die off. Worker bees specifically spend many hours collecting enough carbs (nectar) and protein (pollen) to feed and maintain their colony during the winter months.

Since bees are so important to our environment and they are quickly dying off, here are a few things you can do to help them:

Plant some late-blooming plants that bees find attractive in your garden. Plants like witch hazel, goldenrod, sedum, asters, etc.
Put some water and some pebbles/twigs into a shallow container where bees can land and grab a drink while they are working hard.

Spiders: Fall is the mating season for spiders so you are going to see more hanging out around and in your home. Generally speaking, female spiders usually stick close to their web while males roam about. However, since both genders are looking to mate, they can both be seen gallivanting around. During fall, spiders are searching for a place where they can lay their eggs before winter comes. These eggs will become hatchlings in the spring.

To deter spiders from using your home as their personal place to mate and house their web, be sure that you remove any webs as you see them, no matter how small. This works by discouraging spiders from hanging out in common areas of your home. It may even make them return back to the crawl spaces that they came from. Also, call in pest control, they can help eliminate spiders as an option by setting up preventative measures to keep them out of your home.

Rodents: As the temp drops, rodents start to scurry around. They want to be somewhere that is warm, solid and filled with food. So, what better option than your home? Their lives depend on it because they do not do well in colder weather.

To keep rodents out of your home this fall, call in pest control. Not only can they show you entry points that you may have not even thought about, but they can also set up preventative measures to keep rodents out of your home. Make sure you also clean up any areas that are filled with clutter because rodents love to nestle in these areas because they are warm.

Squirrels: These little furry fun-to-watch critters spend all summer gathering and now that it’s fall, they spend even more time gathering. In fact, if you’ve ever watched a squirrel during spring you will see that they seem to be very stressed and wired. Truth is, they are trying to make sure they have enough stores for the winter so they can hibernate through those months. It is their busiest time.

To make sure they do not end up in your home, call pest control. Pest control can show you entry points where squirrels can get access to the inside of your home. Since they can cause a lot of damage, you don’t want them inside your home. And, you don’t want them in your walls where it’s possible for them to die and cause more issues.

Bats: During the fall months, bats are looking for a place to hide. This could be in the very same place that they raised their young during the summer months. Most often, this is someone’s attic. Possibly, even your attic. The cooler nights drop the insect population which means bats tend to stay put versus venturing out for food that is less of an option for them. Your 35-40 F degree attic meets their conditions for reducing their metabolic processes so they can start to hibernate. But, once they start, they won’t leave until spring.

For all of these pests and more, it’s important to get an early start on pest control. You do not want to wait until you have a pest problem to do something about it because by then, pests could be damaging your property.
